  • Modern Hebrew is a modern North-Western Semitic language and it serves as an official language in the State of Israel, where it is spoken by most of the almost seven million inhabitants.

Besides it is known to some degree also by Jews who live in other countries. It is a language with a rich literature and interesting structure which combines typical Semitic features with unique Indo-European influences.

The course includes all the fundamentals of phonology, morphology, vocabulary and syntax of Modern Hebrew, and it is followed by reading texts in Hebrew prose and poetry.

Students may combine studies in ELCC with courses in Israeli institutions such as the universities of Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem, where they may take proficiency exams.

  • Biblical Hebrew is an ancient North-Western Semitic language in which most of the Old Testament was originally written. Hebrew has been the language of the Jewish people for over three millennia.

Although Hebrew gave way to Aramaic in the postbiblical era, it nevertheless has been used among the Jews as a literary and a ritual language for many centuries.

The course includes all the fundamentals of phonology, morphology, vocabulary and syntax of Classical Biblical Hebrew, and it is followed by reading texts in Biblical Hebrew prose and poetry.

The course may serve as a useful aid to students of theology, linguistics and/or Semitic studies, but it also helps everyone who is interested in reading the Old Testament in its original language in achieving his/her goal.
