Hungarian,
one of the few languages of Europe which is not of Indo-European
origin, is one of the official languages of the European Union.
Being a member of the Uralic family of languages and a mother
tongue of about fifteen million people, not only in Hungary,
but also in Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Austria, Croatia, the
Ukraine and immigrant communities in other countries such as
Canada, USA, Australia and Germany.
Hungarian
is considered a rich and useful language and a good key for the
understanding many aspects of Hungarian life and culture. The
course includes all the fundamentals of phonology, morphology,
vocabulary and syntax of Hungarian, and it is followed by reading
texts in Hungarian prose and poetry.
Students
may combine studies in ELCC with courses in Hungarian institutions,
e.g. Debrecen Summer University and Budapest ELTE University,
where they may take proficiency exams.
